About the museum
The museum was founded in 1950 by Prince Rainier III, initially in the Princely Palace. It is based on a stamp collection assembled at the end of the 19th century by the Reverend G. G. Barbier, purchased by Albert I, then enriched by Louis II before passing to Rainier III.
Since 1996 the museum has occupied a building on the Terrasses de Fontvieille, at the foot of the Rock, facing the port of Fontvieille. It was legally established by the Sovereign Ordinance of 14 December 1995.
The main hall presents the chronology of Monegasque coins since 1641 and of stamps since 1885, as well as models, colour proofs and production machines. The rare stamps room brings together pre-postal documents, Sardinian and French stamps used in the Principality, and the first Monegasque stamps of the reigns of Charles III and Louis II.
