About the museum
The museum lies in the woods near West-Terschelling on the site of the Tigerstellung (Tiger Position), a central radar position of the German occupiers in the Second World War. Across about seven hectares stood more than a hundred bunker buildings in which over two hundred soldiers lived and worked; around 85 of them survive. The complex is among the best-preserved positions in the Netherlands.
In the 1990s Staatsbosbeheer had filled the bunkers with sand for safety reasons. Since May 2012 volunteers of the Stichting Bunkerbehoud Terschelling have been uncovering and furnishing them again; around 40 bunkers have now been excavated. First the command bunker next to the bunker "Bertha" was opened, which became the clubhouse of the volunteers.
The visitor centre is in the former canteen bunker, which lies entirely above ground, and shows an exhibition including a film about Terschelling in wartime and the air war over the Wadden Sea. It has been redesigned since April 2025. Excavated bunker ruins on the site are freely accessible, and six furnished satellite bunkers can be visited using a QR code. The flak bunker and the large command bunker "Bertha" can only be seen on a guided tour.
