About the museum
The Terschelling wreck diver Hille van Dieren has been collecting objects recovered from sunken ships around the island since 1975. The museum grew out of this collection and shows finds from 1650 to the present day. Since 1976 Terschelling divers have tracked down almost 150 wrecks, modern and historic, and over the years have recovered thousands of different objects from them.
The museum is housed in a listed Terschelling farmhouse from 1859. The load-bearing frame consists of remains of the Norwegian barque “Cyprian”, which sank off Terschelling in 1905. Inside there are numerous beach finds, from the contents of washed-up containers to the well-known messages in bottles; a separate exhibition is devoted to the work of the helmet divers on the wreck of the gold ship “Lutine”.
In the museum garden stand the large pieces such as anchors, cannons and the conning tower of an English submarine. Behind the house lies the pirate garden with a real pirate ship, a tree house and a castle, along with a terrace and a playground.
