About the museum
The museum is housed in the oldest house still standing in Oost-Vlieland. Its core was built shortly after 1575; around 1595 the house passed to the newly founded Admiralties, which managed fleet affairs from Vlieland. From 1637 it was privately owned. In 1896 Gooswinus and Betzy Akersloot-Berg bought the house and named it Tromp’s Huys; the Norwegian marine painter lived here until her death in 1922, and the couple had a studio building put up in the garden.
After the death of the housekeeper and heiress Jet Visser in 1955, the municipality of Vlieland bought the house in order to set up a museum. It was restored in 1958/59, with the Province of Friesland providing subsidies on the condition that Frisian elements be incorporated – a Workum chimney surround, a box-bed wall and tiles from Harlingen. The museum opened on 15 June 1960. Since 2001 the building has belonged to the Hendrick de Keyser association; since 2007 the museum has been run by a foundation.
The collection grew out of the Akersloot-Berg estate, with paintings, drawings, household items and an archive. Sea charts, ship models, archaeological finds, telescopes and, since 2008, memorabilia of the writer J. J. Slauerhoff were added. The permanent themes are the island’s maritime history, Betzy Akersloot-Berg and Slauerhoff.
