About the museum

In the middle of the Vliehors, the roughly 20-square-kilometre sand plain in the west of Vlieland, the Drenkelingenhuisje has stood for over a century. The conspicuous white-painted hut dates from 1890 and served as a refuge for shipwreck survivors: anyone who made it ashore from a sunken ship during a storm found blankets, simple food and water there. A telephone line connected it to the Posthuys more than eight kilometres away, and after the storm the rescued were collected by horse and cart.

Today the hut belongs to Vliehors Expres B.V. and is set up as a small beachcombing ("jutter") museum. On display is whatever beachcombers have found along the tideline, from cigarette packets to messages in bottles. From May to October a windbreak of driftwood surrounds the hut and is rebuilt every year.

It can only be visited on the roughly two-hour round trips of the Vliehors Expres, a vehicle with extra-large wheels; the driver tells stories about the finds along the way. Since 1997 the hut has also been an official wedding venue on the island. During school holidays there are evening trips with a campfire, music and stories.
