About the museum

Museum Waelstee in the village of De Waal in the center of Texel goes back to a group of committed Texel residents who, several decades ago, founded the Agrarisch- en Wagenmuseum Texel (Agricultural and Wagon Museum Texel) in an original Stolp farmhouse. At first the main aim was to preserve the island's rural life.

Over the years, exhibition rooms, a depot and a workshop were added; today the museum presents a broad picture of earlier life on Texel across more than 1,500 square meters. After a comprehensive renovation, the exhibition was rebuilt and has since seen itself as a heritage museum for pupils, young people, holidaymakers and island residents.

In two Stolp farmhouses on the village square in front of the church, visitors learn how people on Texel lived and worked without running water, electricity or a telephone. The displays include carts and tools, regional customs and stories, a small farmyard showing how living and working looked a century ago, and weekly demonstrations at the forge and of handicraft techniques. The museum is run entirely by volunteers.
