About the museum

The museum in De Koog on Texel is all about jutten, that is, combing the beach for items washed ashore. It was founded by the beachcomber (jutter) Jan Uitgeest, who for decades collected things the sea washed up on the island's coast. About ten years ago André Eelman and Judith van der Zee, both raised on Texel and from a genuine jutter family, took over the house, which was up for sale, and turned it into a family museum. Until 2019 it was called Schipbreuk- en Juttersmuseum Flora, afterwards Maritiem- en Juttersmuseum Flora. It is run by the Stichting Juttersmuseum Texel foundation.

In several exhibition rooms and sheds lie finds from more than 80 years: buoys, toys, Russian vodka bottles and cargo from containers lost overboard. There are also documents and photos on ships stranded off the coast of Texel, a room with changing exhibitions, and an area on sea rescue (KNRM) with the wooden motor lifeboat “Joan Hodshon” of 1935.

A new pavilion building tells the story of the Texel-owned ferry service TESO; there you can also visit the wheelhouse of the former ferry Schulpengat, which ran between the mainland and Texel from 1990 to 2015. Outside, an adventure trail, a playground with a zip line and climbing tower, and a café with a terrace invite visitors to linger.
