About the museum

The wooden cottage on the Krimp in Zaandam was built in 1632 from old ship timber. It became famous through Tsar Peter the Great, who lived here for eight days in August 1697. The 25-year-old traveled incognito to study shipbuilding and industry in the Zaanstreek region, but his height of over two meters and his Russian companions soon gave him away.

In 1818, King William I bought the cottage for his Russian sister-in-law, Anna Pavlovna. In 1823 she had a protective stone shell built around it. In 1895, Tsar Nicholas II commissioned a new stone enclosure in the style of Russian Orthodox churches, designed by the architects Gerlof and Abraham Salm. The house is considered the second-oldest museum in the Netherlands, after the Teylers Museum in Haarlem. Both the wooden house and the enclosure are national monuments; the ensemble was comprehensively restored in 2013.

On display are, among other things, a death mask of Peter the Great, a bust of Anna Pavlovna, and portraits of the tsar and Catherine I. The Zaans Museum manages the house. The VR app "Zaandam anno 1725" additionally takes visitors into the Zaandam of that era.
