Museum Warten

Village museum in Warten with a former poorhouse and a Greidboerderij (Frisian longhouse farm) from 1725, about life in the water country of the Alde Feanen.

Opening hoursAdmission €4

About the museum

Museum Warten tells of survival in a landscape of reeds, peat and grassland, of life in, on, by and with the water. Warten is considered the gateway to the De Alde Feanen National Park. The museum consists of two buildings.

The poorhouse "It Earmhûs" was built in 1893 by the church council through the diaconate. It served its purpose well into the 20th century; since 1975 it has been the village museum. One of the apartments is preserved in its completely original state. The other rooms cover the hermit couple Sytze and Maaike from the Alde Feanen, bombers shot down during the Second World War, above all a Lancaster, commemorated in the Nauwe Saiter by a monument in the form of a Schwalbenhafen, and the connection between fishing and shipbuilding. One room is reserved for temporary exhibitions.

The museum also includes the Oud Friese Greidboerderij from 1725, a Rijksmonument (national monument) built in the style of a longhouse, as was common in the low-lying, wet region of central Friesland. The farm was restored in keeping with its style; many old farm tools can be seen in it. In summer, the museum also runs trips through the Alde Feanen on an old farm barge on select dates.
