About the museum
When the town hall of Idaarderadeel was built in 1942, part of the ground floor was already earmarked for a museum. The Halbertsma family and others collected objects that were displayed here. In 1949 the municipality received a large donation from Atje Gaastra that was to be exhibited; this led in 1956 to the founding of the "Stichting Gemeentemuseum" in Grou.
At first the municipality was responsible; from 1992 an independent foundation ran the house under the name "Museum De Trije Gritenijen". When in 2014 the northern part of Boarnsterhim, and with it Grou, became part of the municipality of Leeuwarden, the museum received its present name and was completely refurbished.
From 2021 to 2024 it was closed to visitors while holdings and registers were being reworked; the aim was a core collection on Grou with the themes of origins, life, industry and recreation. Since 2025 a permanent exhibition has presented the village. The collection comprises over 6,000 objects. On 1 September 2026 the museum closed temporarily because of a move.
