About the museum
Museum Arnhem is the city of Arnhem's museum for (inter)national modern and contemporary art and design. It stands on the high Stuwwal, with wide views over the Rhine and the floodplain landscape; the freely accessible sculpture garden invites visitors to linger even without an admission ticket. The café is named after Pierre Janssen, who directed the museum from 1969 to 1982.
During a comprehensive renovation, the building received a new wing designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects. It floats more than fifteen metres above the slope, is clad in 82,000 handmade tiles from Koninklijke Tichelaar and adds 550 square metres of exhibition space with four galleries and two public rooms. The colour gradients of the tiles represent the transition from the hilly Veluwe to the Betuwe. The monumental dome became the central reception area with a café and museum shop; on the upper floor there is a freely accessible studio.
The collection comprises more than 25,000 objects: realist art of the 20th century, contemporary jewellery and design, and fashion. Since the 1980s the museum has acquired mainly works by artists from diverse cultural backgrounds. Well-known names include Klaas Gubbels, Pyke Koch, Jan Mankes and Fiona Tan. The holdings are shown in changing presentations at the museum and in the Erfgoedcentrum Rozet, and are stored together with the city's archaeological collection in a central depot in the new wing.
