About the museum
Museum De Roos is on the market square of Geertruidenberg, which received city rights in 1213 as the first city in Holland. The house takes its name from the inn “De Roos”, which operated behind a Renaissance stepped gable in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Spanish commander Alexander Farnese stayed here in 1589, and Prince Frederick Henry in 1625; later the wine merchant and mayor Jasper de Bruyn lived in the house. During restoration in 2002, a coin from the time of Count Willem V (1378) was even found.
The museum's history begins in 1946 with the municipal Oudheidkamer (local history society). In 1973 a storm severely damaged the roof; in 1981 the collection was reopened to the public, and in 1997 a major renovation and a new display followed. In 2004 the house was recognized as a registered museum.
The collection is small but varied: Historica Geertruidenberg, with archaeological finds such as the drinking vessel “Duc d’Alve” from the Eighty Years' War; the collection on Vice Admiral Johan Zoutman; mementos of the poet Juliana de Lannoy; religious objects; 15th-century secco wall paintings; a 14th-century sword; and works by painters from Bergen. The tourist information point of Geertruidenberg is in the same building.
