About the museum
The museum was founded in the early 1990s on the initiative of the Oosterhout architect Frans van der Leeuw, who also designed the courtyard in the town centre. It shows how people in Brabant lived, housed themselves and worked roughly between 1900 and 1960, and today bears the name Brabants Museum Oud Oosterhout.
The centrepiece is the miniature park in the garden: 250 replicas at a scale of 1:20, built by volunteers, showing the town of Oosterhout around 1900 with houses, shops, churches, factories and tanneries. The circular route follows the line of the former steam tram of the Zuider Stoomtramweg Maatschappij. In the Flemish Barn, built from the original beams of a barn from 1739 from Dorst, around twelve old crafts are demonstrated, including cooperage, blacksmithing, clog making and tanning. A former drying barn of a brickworks houses vehicles from the past.
In the indoor museum, visitors enter a Brabant living room with a box bed, a print shop from 1916, a classroom, a “Roman Catholic corner” and the mayor's room with the original furniture of a former mayor. There are also collections of flat irons and scales, earthenware from the Oosterhout factory De Toekomst, and the Abraham organ from 1925. In the coffee room there is an old-fashioned sweet shop with the famous Oosterhout cinnamon stick.
