Museum Møhlmann
A private artist's museum for realist and figurative art by Rob Møhlmann, housed in an 1870 Gulf farmhouse on the Damsterdiep near Appingedam.
About the museum
Museum Møhlmann was privately founded by the realist painter Rob Møhlmann and his wife Laura Møhlmann-de Grijs (1949–2010). After the couple moved from Amsterdam to West Friesland in the late 1980s, Møhlmann initially sold his own works from his studio gallery in Venhuizen. In 1998 he organized the first "Onafhankelijke Realisten Tentoonstelling" there, featuring about thirty well-known Dutch realists; that same year the museum was founded, and it soon moved into a former dairy in the village.
In 2006 the couple acquired the listed farmstead "De Muzeheerd" on the outskirts of Appingedam: a Groningen Gulf farmhouse almost 50 meters long (of the head-neck-body type) dating from around 1870, still largely surrounded by a moat and lined with old chestnut trees. After extensive renovation, the museum opened there at the end of 2008. The ensemble includes the sculpture garden "De Muzehof", a medieval St. Nicholas chapel and a 17th-century painter's studio.
The museum deliberately operates without subsidies or sponsors and is run by Møhlmann with a small team of volunteers. Around 400 works from dozens of collections are on permanent display – from medieval objects, old prints and Roman glass to interwar art and Jan Mankes, through to contemporary realists such as Har Sanders and Arya Plaisier. In addition there are three temporary exhibitions each year, including the realist show held since 1998 and a summer exhibition of miniatures.
