Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd

Rijksmonument country house of 1770 with an unchanged floor plan and Chinese wallpaper rooms, now a venue for changing art and history exhibitions near Utrecht.

Opening hoursAdmission €10 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The country house was built in 1770 as a summer residence for Gerard Godard Taets van Amerongen. He had a bridge built over the Kromme Rijn and the grounds transformed into today's park. Later the estate belonged, among others, to King Louis Napoleon Bonaparte and the Bosch van Drakestein family; since 1951 it has been owned by the municipality of Utrecht.

Because the house was never permanently and intensively inhabited, the floor plan, floors, doors and ceilings have remained unchanged since 1770, along with wallpapers from the 18th and 19th centuries. Above all, the hand-painted Chinese paper wallpaper is famous.

The former Museum Oud Amelisweerd went insolvent in 2018. Today the Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd Foundation runs the house as an exhibition venue on behalf of Stadsherstel Utrecht, the owner: a team and more than 50 volunteers organise changing exhibitions and programmes by Utrecht artists and institutions; the house is open in season only.
