About the museum
The Stichting Rotterdams Radio Museum foundation was established in November 1998 by Harry de Jong Sr., the former director of the Rotterdam electronics retailer Correct. Together with Peter Ivens, the former head of Grundig Nederland, and Henk Heessels, formerly director of JVC Nederland, he formed the board until 2014. Correct has been the main sponsor from the start, provides premises and bears a large part of the costs; the work itself is done by volunteers.
For a long time the collection was housed in a historic building, a former storage shed of the Dutch railways. It has since moved to the second floor above the Correct shop on the Ceintuurbaan. On display are around 2,000 radios, televisions and related electronic devices, the oldest dating from the early days of radio reception around 1900.
The exhibition is divided into radio and sound carriers, television and video, computers and telecommunications, marine and broadcasting technology, and hi-fi and high-end stereo. The volunteers restore and document the items, demonstrate devices and run a library of books, magazines and data carriers. There is a free programme for school classes, along with a friends' association and themed exhibitions.
