About the museum
The Texla bunker near Den Burg belonged to the German resistance nest 21 H of the Atlantic Wall. The complex was built in 1943 and originally comprised almost fifty bunkers, structures and field fortifications. The Regelbau 617 communications bunker secured the connection between the mainland and the German coastal batteries on the island.
The site gained particular significance during the Georgian Uprising, which raged on Texel from April 6 to May 20, 1945: a battalion of Georgian soldiers serving under German command rose against its superiors, and the facility temporarily served as a command post. The fighting cost the lives of around 120 islanders.
After the war almost all bunkers were demolished; only the communications bunker and the former horse stable at the corner of Georgiaweg were preserved. Part of the complex was hidden under sand until volunteers uncovered the bunker from 2017 onward. Since 2018 it has been open to visitors on special days. On display are finds from the site, donated war objects with a connection to Texel, and reconstructed rooms that give an impression of everyday life in an occupied bunker.
