About the museum
Bergens Tekniske Museum is housed in the Trikkehallen (tram hall) at Møhlenpris, which was designed by architect Schak Bull and completed in 1913. The tramway company Sporveien used the hall until the trams in Bergen were discontinued in 1965. The interest organisation Bergens Tekniske Museum was founded in 1974 and moved into the hall in 1990, when the building had been approved for demolition. Volunteers saved it, and the site was listed by Riksantikvaren in 1994.
The museum consists of the Vognhallen (carriage hall) and the Trykkeriet (printing works). In the Vognhallen stand trams, trolleybuses, locomotives, veteran cars, military vehicles, buses, motorcycles and velocipedes (tråsykler), and a large triple-expansion steam engine of around 300 horsepower is put back into operation on selected Sundays. The printing works shows the art of printing and has a fully operational museum print shop with Norway's oldest working printing press.
For over thirty years a separate association has recreated parts of the old tram line 3, and the museum tram runs between the Trikkehallen and the city centre. The whole museum is run on a voluntary basis, and the building is also a cultural centre where many organisations hold meetings and workshops.
