About the museum
Astrup Fearnley Museet opened in October 1993 in Dronningens gate in Kvadraturen. It was founded by the foundations of the Astrup and Fearnley families, and Hans Rasmus Astrup took the initiative to share the families' large art collection with the public. The museum is organised as a limited company and is owned by Stiftelsen Thomas Fearnley, Heddy og Nils Astrup and Stiftelsen Hans Rasmus Astrup.
In 2012 the museum moved to Tjuvholmen, into a new building designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano. Queen Sonja opened the new museum on 27 September 2012. The complex consists of two buildings on either side of a canal, and the museum building lies in a sculpture park that was also designed by Piano.
In the building nearest the fjord, changing exhibitions of Norwegian and international contemporary art are shown, while the building over the canal shows a rotating selection from the Astrup Fearnley Collection. The collection includes works by, among others, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer, Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman. The museum is known for sensational acquisitions, such as Koons' Michael Jackson and Bubbles.
Today the museum manages the collection and shows both exhibitions of works from it and new productions by artists from around the world. In the museum's sculpture park visitors can see sculptures by some of the world's leading contemporary artists. The museum uses museum hosts instead of security guards in the exhibition halls.
