About the museum
VilVite is one of the largest science centres in the Nordic countries and receives around 120,000 visitors a year. The centre was started in 2007, after Norsk Hydro took the initiative to establish it and supported its development with NOK 100 million over ten years. The agreement was later transferred to Statoil, now Equinor, and the centre has had strong links to business in Western Norway (Vestlandet) since the start.
The core is a large, interactive exhibition at Marineholmen, where visitors can explore and experiment with themes such as the body and health, the planet and climate, energy, the sea and water, and technology. VilVite is run as a non-profit organisation. Surpluses from tickets, courses and projects go back into new learning experiences and into strengthening interest in science and maths (realfag).
About a third of visits come from schools and nurseries, and the centre has a large range of learning programmes for them, as well as offers for businesses and public bodies. VilVite is one of 13 Norwegian science centres that receive regular grants from the Research Council of Norway (Forskningsrådet).
