About the museum
Lysverket is the only one of Kode's art museums that was not built as a museum. The building was designed by the architects Fredrik Arnesen and Arthur Darre Kaarbø and was completed in 1938 as the administration building of the municipal power company Bergen Lysverker, which gave the museum its name. The large, round Tårnsalen (the Tower Hall) is easily recognised in Bergen's cityscape.
In Lysverket, Kode has shown the oldest art in its collections, from 1400 to 1900: from Dutch folk life and religious motifs to around 250 years of portrait and landscape painting from Norwegian mountains and fjords. International modernism has also been shown here, with the Rolf Stenersen collection at its core, including works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Anna-Eva Bergman and Asger Jorn, and a separate exhibition on Nikolai Astrup. The children's art museum KunstLab has moved to Permanenten.
The building is to be renovated, and until then changing exhibitions are shown here. At present there are no exhibitions. The museum shares the building with the Michelin restaurant Lysverket.
