About the museum
Brannmuseet is housed in the former Grønland fire station in Grønlandsleiret. The fire station was closed in 1992, and after renovation in 1995–1998 the Historielaget for Oslo brann- og feiervesen (the Oslo Fire and Chimney Sweep Service History Society) moved in and set up the museum.
The museum collects and preserves the fire history of Oslo, which spans more than 150 years. The collection includes equipment from various periods, among them fire engines and hose carts, as well as photographs of the city’s fire service.
The museum is run on a voluntary basis, mainly by retired firefighters, with support from Oslo brann- og redningsetat (Oslo Fire and Rescue Service). It also offers a programme for kindergartens through Barnebrannstasjonen (the Children’s Fire Station), where “Bjørnis” teaches children over three about fire safety.
