About the museum

Cementmuseet was established in 1991 and preserves objects, archive material and photographs from Aktieselskabet Christiania Portland Cementfabrik, which was located in Slemmestad. The material shows the cement production from the time the company became Norwegian-owned in 1892 until it became part of the Norcem group in 1968, and it tells of the factory's great importance for the place and the people who lived there.

The cement factory in Slemmestad was started in the 1880s, when interest arose in the limestone deposits in the area. Before that, Slemmestad was an agricultural district. For a long time the factory was an important part of Norwegian industry and supplied cement to roads and buildings, among other things. Production peaked in 1973 at over one million tonnes, and in total almost 29 million tonnes of cement were made in Slemmestad. After more than 130 years of operation the factory was closed in 2014, and parts of the buildings have been preserved as cultural heritage (kulturminner).

The museum was originally located in the factory's old sack factory in the town centre and is now managed by Slemmestad library, in Slemmestad innbyggertorg (citizens' service centre). The history of working life at the factory covers everything from mixing raw materials and running the kilns to packing cement, and how workers' conditions gradually improved through wages, pensions, health and safety measures and trade unions. The tradition of the 1 May train from Heggedal to Slemmestad lives on.
