About the museum
Slependen kalkovn was built in 1914 for Slependen Kalkverk A/S (lime works). It is a shaft kiln, a modern type of kiln that was filled with limestone and coal from the top. The stone was burned to lime, which was taken out at the bottom and transported away by railway. Stone for the kiln came from nearby quarries, and the lime was loaded onto a quay at Sandvika. The lime works was in operation until about 1940.
The kiln is the only surviving industrial kiln of its type in Asker and Bærum, and it is regarded as one of the most important industrial heritage sites in Bærum. The exterior was restored from 1982 and the interior in 1994. The drawing of the kiln is also used in the municipal coat of arms (kommunevåpen) of Bærum.
Today the kiln functions as a small museum. Visitors can climb the stairs to a room at the top of the building, where a photo exhibition tells the history of lime burning in Asker and Bærum.
