About the museum
Lier Bygdetun lies in Lierdalen by the old Kongeveien (King’s Road) in the Paradisbakkene hills. The rural heritage farmstead is owned and run as a private, independent foundation, receives regular grants from Lier municipality and is run with great voluntary effort by volunteers and members of Historielaget (the local history society). It is the first completed flatbygd museum in Buskerud, with several buildings typical of the region.
Vivelstad school, Heg Gjestgiveri (Heg inn), the outbuilding and the storehouse were the first finished buildings around the central farmyard, and the Landhandelen (general store) came somewhat later. The Perseverkstedet, a joinery workshop that the Hennum brothers started in 1908, lies close to the farmyard. A farmyard is soon complete, with the svalgangshuset (house with an open gallery) from Helgerud, the våningshuset (main house) from Vestre Egge (planned to be finished by the end of 2026), a stabbur, a forge, a kjone (drying shed) and a farm pond (gårdsdam).
The buildings lie between cultivated fields, an orchard, ornamental gardens and deciduous woodland. The property also has an outdoor assembly place (utendørsamfi), a burial mound (gravhaug) and cup-marked stones (skålgroper). A husmannsplass (cotter’s farm), several stabbur and barns are planned, and the farmyard is eventually to get fences and grazing animals in summer. Throughout the year events include the Eplefestivalen (Apple Festival), a Christmas market and intimate concerts.
