About the museum
Norsk Bremuseum is located in Fjærland by the Fjærlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord. The museum is a private foundation established in 1989 by, among others, Den Norske Turistforening, the International Glaciological Society, NVE, Norsk Polarinstitutt, Høgskulen i Sogn og Fjordane and the universities of Bergen and Oslo. Its purpose is to collect, create and disseminate knowledge about glaciers and climate. The building was designed by the architect Sverre Fehn, who received the commission in 1989, and the museum opened in 1991.
The main exhibition covers glaciology, physical geography, climate, geology and history and consists of 27 parts that have been translated into 13 languages. Visitors can, among other things, experiment with real ice from the glacier, walk into the Bretunga and under the glacier in a meltwater channel, see exhibitions about the Ice Man Ötzi and about the aircraft that crashed on Bøyabreen in 1972, and watch a panorama film about Jostedalsbreen. The experience exhibition “Klima i endring – frå fortid til framtid” (Climate Change – From Past to Future) is linked to the Ulltveit-Moe senter for klimaviten (Ulltveit-Moe Centre for Climate Literacy).
In 2026 the exhibition has been expanded with an interactive model of Jostedalsbreen based on the JOSTICE research project, and an interactive screen where guests can explore several of the glacier's arms. The museum is one of three authorised visitor centres for Jostedalsbreen National Park.
