About the museum
Fauske bygdetun lies right by the centre of Fauske, facing the fjord and surrounded by birch forest. The main theme is clothing: the farmstead tells the history of Salten, starting from what people wore in the past. Both the permanent and the changing exhibitions show historical costumes from all social classes.
In Knurvikhuset part of Salten's costume history is shown, from the poor man's patched waistcoat to the silk jacket of a civil servant's wife in the Parisian fashion of the day. There is also an exhibition about the local “healer” (helbreder) Johannes Brateng, who was known far beyond Fauske.
In Rødbrakka, the farmstead's administration building, there are changing exhibitions and a museum shop. In Bestemorstua (Grandmother's Cottage) children can experience everyday life of about a hundred years ago, without water, electricity or modern aids. The farmstead is run by Nordlandsmuseet.
