About the museum
The visitor mine is the so-called Grunnstollen (the Grunnstollen adit), the entrance to a large network of mines inside the mountain. Work on it began in 1900, and in 1908 a connection to the Giken mine was made from here, so that ore from the depths could be transported out this way.
From 1914 the ore was transported out by electric locomotives. Before that, horses provided the power, and metal fittings where the horses were tied can still be seen. Falling copper prices forced the mines to close. The last working day in this mine was Friday 28 June 1991, and photographs from the last shift are on display in the visitor mine.
Today the original mine locomotive takes visitors 1.6 kilometres into Sulitjelmafjellet. The trip begins with a short introduction to the mines in the area and the Grunnstollen, and experienced guides talk about mining operations and life as a miner in the 1900s. The mine is run by Nordlandsmuseet.
