About the museum
Ålesund was founded on fishing and trade, and the Fiskerimuseet tells the story of the rise of modern fishing and how it shaped the town and its surroundings. The museum is located in Holmbua, also called Jervell-bua, in the inner harbour of Ålesundet, sheltered by Molja and the harbour lighthouse. The street the museum stands in is the best-preserved cluster of houses in Ålesund from before the town fire of 1904.
Holmbua was built around 1858 by consul Frederik Hanssen. When Oluf Holm AS took over the bua, and gradually most of the buildings in Molovegen, the firm carried out large-scale production and export of medicinal cod-liver oil. In the 1850s Peter Møller made a breakthrough in the production of medicinal cod-liver oil, and the museum shows a large collection of production equipment from this industry.
The exhibitions deal with klippfisk on Sunnmøre and its export to countries in southern Europe and South America, the development of the fishing fleet from the open eight-oared boat (åttring) to today’s fishing vessels, and the pilots (losene) from the Middle Ages to today. Also belonging to the museum are the cod-liver oil works (tranbrenneriet), the barrel factory (tønnefabrikken) and the cooper’s workshop (bøkkerverkstedet) in Molovegen.
