About the museum
Jugendstilsenteret opened on 6 June 2003 in the former Svaneapoteket (Swan Pharmacy) by Brosundet. The building was designed by Hagbarth Martin Schytte-Berg and erected between 1905 and 1907 after the town fire of 1904. It was the first Art Nouveau building in Ålesund to be protected, in 1985. The old pharmacy interior today serves as the entrance to the museum and is regarded as one of the town's best-preserved Art Nouveau interiors.
The neighbouring art museum KUBE is housed in the former Norges Bank building from 1906, which was remodelled in 2005 to accommodate the art museum. During 2004–2005 the two buildings were linked with a new underground building, and today Jugendstilsenteret and KUBE form one joint art museum for Møre og Romsdal with national responsibility for Art Nouveau.
The collection has grown strongly in recent years through gifts and purchases and has a particular emphasis on Norwegian and Nordic Art Nouveau and on art with connections to the region. KUBE shows several changing art exhibitions a year. The museum is now part of Viti, the regional museum of Sunnmøre.

KUBE has step-free access and a lift to all floors. Jugendstilsenteret has access to all floors via a separate entrance at the back and a stair lift for wheelchairs, operated by the visitor staff. The main entrance cannot be used by wheelchair because of narrow passages and high door frames in the protected pharmacy interior, and parts of the house have high door thresholds. Both buildings have accessible toilets (HC toilets), and there is accessible parking (HC parking) at the back of Jugendstilsenteret. Guide dogs are welcome.
