About the museum
Waldehuset was the only house in the eastern district of Ålesund that did not burn down during the town fire on 23 January 1904. When 850 houses were lost and ten thousand people were left homeless, the house in Fjellgata was left standing among the ruins. According to the story, Anders Nord, who lived there, had been visited by an angel the day before the fire, who promised that the house and everything left in it would be spared. He is later said to have remarked that it was no warmer inside the house than on an ordinary day.
The house dates from 1871 and was owned for much of the time by the Wald family. The Filadelfia Pentecostal church in Ålesund received the house as a gift in 2012 and has restored it, so that visitors can now go inside this special house. The museum is run by Foreningen Waldehuset, and the house also has a café with simple refreshments and a function room.
