About the museum
Forsvarets flysamling is located at Gardermoen, just north of Oslo, and displays around 40 aircraft that cover the entire history of the Norwegian Air Force (Luftforsvaret), from the pioneer era in the early 20th century to modern fighter jets. The collection includes Norway's first aircraft, “Start” from 1912, irreplaceable treasures from the Second World War and all of the Air Force's jet fighters from the Cold War, including the F-104 Starfighter. Several of the aircraft are unique in both Norwegian and international terms.
The museum gives an insight into Norwegian aviation in war and peace and into how the Air Force has developed. Along with the aircraft, uniforms, models, engines, photomontages and film are shown. Separate exhibitions deal with air defence and a model aircraft collection.
The aircraft collection is part of Forsvarshistorisk museum, and the friends' association describes it as the largest aviation museum in Østlandet (Eastern Norway). The collection also includes the rescue helicopter Westland Sea King. There are separate activities for children, a museum shop and a café.
