About the museum
Stein skole in Vormsund, also called “Eventyrskolen” (the Fairy-Tale School), is a village school that was decorated by well-known Norwegian artists in the 1930s. Reidar Aulie, Dagfinn Werenskiold, Henrik Sørensen and many others turned the school's interior into an imaginative and colourful setting for teaching. The headteacher Erling Elverhøi and Ingeborg Refling Hagen were the driving forces behind the artworks, words and quotations painted on walls, doors, staircases and other surfaces.
The school building was in regular use from 1912 to 1972. Next to it stands the “gamleskolen” (old school) from 1852, which was used until 1912. Today Stein skole is run as a museum by Nes samlinger, a department of MiA – Museene i Akershus. Out of consideration for the school's fragile interior, visitors can only walk around together with a guide.
On site there is a café, an art gallery and a museum shop. Those who cannot visit the school can view online exhibitions about the artists at Stein skole and a 360-degree tour. Outside opening hours, closed guided tours can be booked for families, groups of friends, clubs and associations.
