About the museum
The painter and writer Christian Skredsvig (1854–1924) bought the holding Hagan in Eggedal in 1895. There was only a small log storehouse there, which he rebuilt into a studio and later into a family home. He drew the house himself and took part in the building work, and it was finished in 1898. Skredsvig lived at Hagan until his death in 1924. The house is built over several levels in the terrain and is regarded as one of the best-preserved artist's homes from the golden age of Norwegian painting.
Both the house and its interior have stood untouched since the family lived there. The rooms are furnished with antique peasant furniture and objects from Skredsvig's travels abroad, and around 150 original works by him and his artist friends hang on the walls. Sigdal municipality opened Hagan as a museum in 1971. Today Hagan is owned by Stiftelsen Kunstnerhjemmene i Sigdal, which also owns Th. Kittelsens Lauvlia, and Buskerudmuseene runs the artists' homes under a lease agreement.
Galleri Skredsvig opened on 18 June 2016 in a converted barn on the farm. The gallery was built to show Skredsvig's large paintings "Menneskens Søn" (Son of Man) and "Ungdomsfest i Eggedal" (Youth Party in Eggedal), which are owned by Nasjonalmuseet. New thematic exhibitions of his art are shown every year, and the artist's home can only be experienced with a guide.
