About the museum
Lauvlia opened as a museum in 1995 and is the most personal memorial to the artist Theodor Kittelsen. Extensive restoration work has returned the house as authentically as possible to how it was when the Kittelsen family lived there. Based on notes from the family and Inga's surviving receipts, colours and original furniture have been put back, supplemented by period-appropriate furnishings. Both inside and outside, Kittelsen's own carvings and painted motifs can still be seen, and the house also displays a large collection of his sketches.
Everyone who visits Lauvlia receives a personal tour of the artist's home with one of the museum's guides. The family's storehouse (stabbur) and henhouse have been made into Barnas hus (the Children's House), where children can paint with a view of Kittelsen's motif Andersnatten, and on Barnas sti (the Children's Path) Tom Berres' sculptures can set the imagination going on the way up to Lauvlia's own troll castle (trollborg) and amphitheatre (amfi).
Lauvlia lies by the lake Soneren in Sigdal, with views of Andersnatten, Båneberget, Eggedalsfjella and Norefjell. In 2016 the place was awarded Olavsrosa, a quality mark for experiences based on Norwegian cultural heritage. The museum is run by Buskerudmuseene.
