About the museum
Kunsthuset Kabuso is located in Øystese by Hardangerfjorden and shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art. The ticket for the main exhibitions also gives access to the Ingebrigt Vik museum right next door.
The Ingebrigt Vik museum houses works by the sculptor Ingebrigt Vik (1867–1927). The artist bequeathed the collection to his home village of Øystese, and the museum became the first purely sculpture museum in the Norwegian countryside when it opened in 1934. The distinctive octagonal building houses bronze, plaster, clay and marble works, from sketches to signed pieces. Vik is known for his restrained and precise depiction of the human body. The film “Han skapte liv” (26 minutes) can be seen in the museum.
Hardanger Skyspace is a permanent artwork by James Turrell that opened on 23 September 2016 and is shown daily around sunrise and sunset. Kabuso is part of Hardanger og Voss museum.
