About the museum
Kunstsilo is housed in a former grain silo from 1935 on Odderøya in Kristiansand, which has been converted into an art and cultural centre. In 2015 Nicolai Tangen gave his art collection to his home town of Kristiansand. The collection is regarded as the world's largest collection of Nordic modernism. In 2016 Sørlandets Kunstmuseum, as it was then called, was granted permanent use of the collection by AKO Kunststiftelse.
The project was fully financed in 2019, and construction began the same year. Sørlandets Kunstmuseum moved out of its old premises in Kvadraturen in 2021, and Kunstsilo opened to the public on 11 May 2024 in the new cultural quarter by the sea in the city centre.
Stiftelsen Kunstsilo manages three permanent collections: the Tangen Collection, the Sørlandssamlingen and Christianssands Billedgalleri. Among the artists shown are Franciska Clausen, Reidar Aulie, Grete Helland-Hansen Nash, Adolph Tidemand and Per Kleiva. The building has nine floors of exhibitions, a brasserie on the 1st floor and a panorama floor on the 9th floor with a view over the city.
