Kystmuseet i Sogn og Fjordane

Coastal museum in the skerries near Florø, with a boat hall, an exhibition on the herring fishery and fishermen’s huts on the coastal heath.

Opening hoursAdmission NOK 140 Café

About the museum

The Kystmuseet i Sogn og Fjordane lies beautifully in the skerries a few kilometres outside Florø town centre, and it sets out to present the history of all coastal municipalities in the county, from Gulen in the south to Stad in the north. The museum is a department of Musea i Sogn og Fjordane, the consolidated museum for Sogn og Fjordane.

In Florø the museum has two architect-designed museum buildings. The boat hall houses a large collection of local boat types and objects that tell of life lived in step with the resources of the sea. The Florø exhibition shows how the rich herring fishery turned a sparsely populated area into Norway’s westernmost town.

Outdoors, visitors can walk among historic fishermen’s huts on the coastal heath and follow the nature and culture trail along the marked footpaths. On the jetty there are family activities, and in summer goats help keep the cultural landscape in good condition. The café serves coffee and homemade baked goods, and the museum shop sells gifts, yarn, toys and books.
