About the museum
Vågsberget is an old trading post and inn that can be traced back to the 17th century. The site lies by the sea near the rich fisheries at Toskangerpollen and Vågsvågen, where travellers found safe harbour and a bed. The fish that came in was received and processed, and the trading post was important for the whole neighbourhood.
The site is regarded as one of the best-preserved trading posts and inns along the Norwegian coast. Seven listed buildings remain, most of them from the early 19th century. The main building has a rich interior with furniture, wallpaper, woodcarving and ornaments, and the large general store supplied farmers and fishermen with goods. In addition there are a storehouse (pakkhus), boathouses (naust), a servants' dwelling and lodging buildings.
Today Vågsberget is run as a museum by Musea i Sogn og Fjordane. The old administration building has become a reception, gift shop and café, and the park by the sea is easy to reach both from land and from the water.
