About the museum
Jakob Sande-tunet lies at Klokkargarden in Dale i Sunnfjord, which was the bell-ringer and teacher's farm of Fjaler municipality from 1862. The poet Jakob Sande was born in Bestefarstaua on 1 December 1906, and both his grandfather and his father were bell-ringers who lived here. Today the farm is owned by the Jakob Sande-selskapet (company) and is the main seat of Jakob Sande – senter for forteljekunst (centre for the art of storytelling), which opened in August 2020.
The centre is a national centre for oral and written storytelling, and it manages and communicates the legacy of Jakob Sande. In the farmyard, Bestefarstaua houses a museum collection and an exhibition; the residential house, Sande's childhood home, is today an office and writers' residence; and Løa has been converted into a cultural house. The old school building, which Fjaler municipality owns, functions as a bookshop, krambu (general store) and café.
The museum in Bestefarstaua shows some of Sande's belongings and many photographs from his life. In the other part of the house there is an exhibition adapted to the centre's theme of the year. Visitors can also book a guided tour in Jakob Sande's footsteps or in the footsteps of Nikka Vonen.
