About the museum
The prehistoric village Landa lies at Fossanmoen in Forsand, by the Lysefjord. During the 1980s and 1990s, some of the largest archaeological excavations in Norway were carried out here. Over 80,000 square metres have been investigated, and traces of more than 250 houses have been found, dating from around 1500 BC to around AD 600. Landa is regarded as the oldest village known in Norway, and so far the only one.
The settlement grew from one or two farms early in the Bronze Age to around 20 farms in the Migration Period, surrounded by pastures and fields. Six burial mounds have also been found in the area. Landa aims to convey knowledge of prehistoric times through reconstructions of buildings, ways of life and working conditions.
Today four prehistoric houses stand on the site: a Bronze Age house from around 1000 BC with clay walls and a turf roof, together with an associated storehouse; the feasting hall from the Migration Period, which is 40 metres long and was the chieftain’s great hall; and a smithy from the same period. Posts in the ground mark several of the 250 houses that were uncovered. The prehistoric village is now located at Landa Park, which also runs a campsite and cabin rental.
