About the museum
Limagarden lies at the north-western end of Limavatnet and is one of the farms at Ytre Lima in Gjesdal. The farm has existed since the 1600s. Sheep farming was always a main livelihood, and the family also fished for trout, whitefish and char in Limavatnet and Flassavatnet. On the farm they made sheep bells and later skates, among other things, and they made their own wooden clogs.
The last generation was the siblings Tore, Jenny and Lars Lima, who grew up here with their parents Severin and Martha Maria. Tore and Jenny bequeathed the farm, with its buildings, tools and household contents, to Gjesdal municipality on condition that it be used as a local history museum. The municipality took over after the last of the siblings died in 1986, and Gjesdal bondelag and bondekvinnelag (the farmers’ and farmers’ wives’ associations) took part in converting the farm from a private home into a museum. In 1989 the object collection of Gjesdal bygdemuseum was moved here from Bollestad.
The buildings comprise the main house (heimehuset), a Jæren house from 1848 that was restored in 1988–89; the fodder barn (fôrløa) with a timber-frame structure (grindbygg) from around 1800; the sheep house; a barn (løe) with a miljøloft (loft) and a smithy; and an eldhus. In the main house one can see how everyday life was organised between the living room (daglegstove), the storeroom (bu) and the kitchen, and in the loft there is a small exhibition on tools and working methods in wool processing. Limagarden is now run as part of Jærmuseet.
