About the museum
Lommedalsbanen is a museum railway that shows the use of different types of railway equipment from construction work, industry and the Armed Forces in Norway. There has never been a railway where the line lies today, but it has been the only way to show a little-known part of construction history that transformed the country from an agricultural to an industrial nation.
The railway was started in a garden at Haslum in Bærum in 1957 by a railway enthusiast who wanted to preserve equipment from the old mine and construction railways with a track gauge of 60 centimetres. In 1979 the foundation was allowed to use an area in Lommedalen, and the first 45 metres of track were laid. Today the track length is about 1,000 metres. Lommedalsbanen is organised as a private self-owning foundation established in 1987, and since 2007 it has been part of MiA – Museene i Akershus.
The collection includes, among others, the steam locomotive Bjørkaasen from 1904, the rail car Major’n and a number of diesel locomotives. The railway is run on a voluntary basis and receives support from Kulturdepartementet (the Ministry of Culture) and Bærum kommune, and in the summer half-year trains run with both steam and diesel locomotives.
