About the museum
The Brannhistorisk samling (Fire History Collection) is housed in the old main fire station in Christiesgate in Bergen. The collection tells the history of the Bergen brannvesen (fire service) from 1863 to 2007. The station building in red brick was completed in 1888 and is largely preserved as it was when it was a fire station, as much as it is a museum. The Hagerupsgården from 1705 belongs to the site, and the cellar here was where the fire service originally started. The old hose cellar dates back to the 16th century.
The collection includes around sixteen fire engines from several countries, which rotate in the exhibition, horse-drawn fire carriages from the 1890s and a hand-drawn carriage from 1863. There are fire uniforms from 1938 to 2007, an original fire alarm centre from the late 19th century to the 1990s, and a workshop that is still in use. The hall displays over 10,000 digitised photographs from the fire service’s history, and a memorial plaque commemorates the Bergen firefighters who lost their lives during the Second World War. The Bergen Brannkorps Musikkorps (fire brigade music corps) was founded in 1891, and the great fire of 1916 is commemorated with the station’s horse-drawn vehicles.
