About the museum
Nord-Troms Museum manages the cultural heritage of Nord-Troms, where Sámi, Kven and Norwegian culture have lived side by side. The museum was established in 1979 and has its administration and main exhibition at Halti in Storslett in Nordreisa. Much of the region’s cultural heritage was lost due to the policy of Norwegianisation and the burning of Finnmark and Nord-Troms towards the end of the Second World War, so the collection of 55 buildings, 17,000 objects and 80,000 photographs is especially valuable.
The main exhibition “Møter / Encounters / Deaivvadit / Kohtaamissii” at Halti takes visitors on a walk from the coast to the open plateau. It tells of the meeting places that connected people, from the trading posts along the sea route and the kitchen of the farm to the outfields and the reindeer fence, with the main emphasis on the period around 1900. The text is in Norwegian, English, Kven and Sámi.
The museum also manages seven historic farmsteads: Dalstuene in Kvænangsbotn, Maursund gård on Kågen in Skjervøy, Tørfoss kvengård in Reisadalen, Holmenes sea Sámi farm in Birtavarre, Gamslett fisher-farmer’s farm at Svensby in Lyngen, the market place at Skibotn and Opheim gård in Storfjord. The sites are open in the summer season and during events.
