About the museum
Tirpitz Museum is located in Kåfjord, a short drive from Alta town centre, and is one of Norway’s most authentic war history museums. The museum tells the story of the German battleship Tirpitz, which was the largest battleship of the Second World War. The ship lay in Altafjorden for several years and made the area a strategic centre in the north.
The collection consists of authentic objects, pictures, models and film. The exhibition sheds light both on the naval battles and on the soldiers and the everyday life of the local population during the occupation. According to Visit Alta, the museum was opened in 1980 by Even Blomkvist.
