About the museum
Norsk Fiskeværsmuseum is located in Å, at the end of the E10 and Kongeveien (the King’s Road), and shows one of the best-preserved and most complete old fishing villages in Northern Norway. The museum was founded on 3 July 1987 by Moskenes historie- og museumslag (Moskenes History and Museum Society) in cooperation with Moskenes kommune and Sigurd Harald Ellingsen, and it officially opened in June 1988. Today it is run by Museum Nord.
Visitors can experience the authentic buildings from the 19th century: a boathouse (båtnaust), a cod-liver oil boiling house (trandamperi), a smallholder’s room (husmannsstue), a smithy, a post office, a rorbu (fishermen’s cabin) and a bakery. The museum shows the everyday life of the travelling fisherman, the local families and the fishing-station owner (væreieren), who ran the fishing village from around 1840 to 1960. The main theme is the hard and picturesque life in a fishing village during the Lofoten fishery and throughout the year.
In the old bakery bread is still baked in the stone oven from 1878, and the museum café serves home-baked cakes, waffles and cinnamon buns (kanelsnurrer). Guided tours take place on most days, and there is also an audio guide at the museum.
