About the museum

Lofotakvariet is in Kabelvåg in Lofoten and shows fish and other sea creatures from the waters around the island group. In the aquariums visitors can see everything from sea cucumbers and sea urchins to larger fish such as skrei (Northeast Arctic cod) and halibut. For many, the highlight is the feeding of the otters and seals, which takes place twice a day and lasts about 20 minutes.

The aquarium also has an exhibition on corals, an exhibition on salmon and a display facility for Norwegian aquaculture. A 15-minute film about skrei explains why the skrei fishery has been so important for Lofoten. The café has a sea view, and the aquarium has a floating pontoon where guests arriving by boat can tie up during opening hours.

Lofotakvariet is part of SKREI, together with Lofotmuseet, Galleri Espolin and Otolitten. All of them belong to Museum Nord and are a short walk from one another. There are joint tickets and an annual pass for the whole of SKREI. A visit can last anything from 20 minutes to several hours, depending on how much time is spent at the aquariums and exhibitions.
