About the museum
Lofotmuseet lies right down by the sea at Storvågan in Kabelvåg, on the site of the medieval town of Vágar. Here stands the main building from 1815, together with authentic rorbuer (fishermen’s cabins) and several naust (boathouses) with Nordland boats. The site is one of the best-preserved fishing stations in the region and was one of the most important fishing villages in Lofoten throughout the 1800s.
The main house was built in 1815, when Caspar Lorch was the owner (væreier) of the fishing station at Storvågan. He let out rorbuer, bought fish and exported, and at its height there were more than 100 rorbuer on the site. The museum lets visitors feel the contrast between life in the main house and the simple conditions of the fishermen.
The exhibitions deal with Lofoten fishing, traditional crafts and the traditional wooden boats from the time when fishing was still done by hand. On the site there is also a krambu (country store) with an old-fashioned range of goods and a garden with historic perennials. The museum is open regardless of the weather, and the site is child-friendly. Lofotmuseet is part of SKREI, together with Lofotakvariet, Galleri Espolin and Otolitten, and there is a joint ticket for all of SKREI.
