About the museum
Ny-Ålesund By- og Gruvemuseum (Ny-Ålesund City and Mining Museum) is housed in a timber building from 1917 that was first a warehouse and from 1920 the town's shop. The museum opened in 1988 and is owned by Kings Bay AS, which also owns and runs the settlement. Coal mining in Ny-Ålesund began in 1916 and ended in 1963, and since the 1960s research has been the main activity.
The exhibitions show the settlement's early history as a mining community, and in the loft the exhibition is about the attempts to reach the North Pole in the 1920s. A newer section presents research in Ny-Ålesund over the last fifty years. The museum was modernised from 2011 and reopened in 2014, with themes including the area's history from the 17th century, coal mining, the mining accident in 1962, early aviation on Svalbard, and the society and culture of the settlement.
Next to the museum, an information centre on environmental research in the area opened in 2009.
